“I probably didn’t miss anything great,” Mai thought late one night after missing a friend’s party. “Maybe just some boys,” she mused as she looked at the pictures on Facebook. Then she was drawn to that one guy…
She clicked on the profile, “Gabe Berg,” and started scrolling. “He’s not my type, with tattoos and all,” she thought as she looked through his pictures. But she couldn’t help but keep looking through his profile…and soon developed a bit of a crush on him. She “liked” one of his old timeline photos, then her phone froze. So that was all the “stalking” she could do for the night.
After he had received a notification that this cute girl named “Mai” liked one of his old photos, he did a bit of stalking of his own with her profile. One of the things he immediately noticed from her account was how involved she was with her family, so he sent her a friend request.
A little surprised to see a friend request from Gabe, she accepted and sent him a message. Almost immediately she regretted sending it- and inside she was like, “please, please just ignore me and don’t respond.”
Gabe did respond, and they started chatting for about a week before it happened. While Mai wasn’t crazy about the whole online thing, their mutual friends knew that they needed a plan for them. There was a concert Gabe was going to, and so Mai’s friends told her that if she went, they’d buy her ticket. With a free ticket, Mai agreed to go- and imagine that, Gabe was there! J
From there, Gabe asked her out on a date- saying that he’d cook her some food (that date ended up being more like trying to find his roommate’s dog that had run away). He definitely made it up though, taking her on countless dates to many different and wonderful places. Then, on a trip to Vegas, he knew it was the perfect time to ask the girl of his dreams to marry him.
She thought something was up and was pretty sure that he was going to ask her on the gondola ride that they were planning to take.
Gabe knew three things… Mai was probably expecting him to propose on the gondola ride, more than likely he would have to make a reservation for the gondola, and he was going to propose at the Eiffel Tower.
In order to make it work, he didn’t make a reservation. So, when they did arrived at the “river,” he was right, yet acted like he was disappointed and upset. Mai tried her best to calm him down and suggested they go to the Eiffel Tower (couldn’t have played it better, Gabe). That’s where Gabe got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife.
At first Mai was shocked. She still thought Gabe was majorly ticked off about the gondola ride, so she turned her back in confusion and said, “What are you doing?! No!” Then as she turned back around, she happily accepted the ring and his proposal!
Gabe had the ring custom made for Mai, incorporating her dreams of a ring, along with his own, to make a gorgeous piece for her to wear forever.
One and a half years of marriage later, Gabe and Mai are now expecting a little girl this year… and they could not be more excited!
Gabe and Mai are the most down to earth, kind, and genuine people you could ever meet. I had such fun getting to explore Hoyt Arboretum Park with them, and never have I had a couple so helpful in carrying things and helping wherever they could. I can tell from their fun-loving personality, they’re going to be the best parents.
Gabe and Mai, your love for each other is a beautiful thing to witness, and I hope these few last months of being just the two of you are thoroughly cherished… and that these pictures help you remember this sweet season as you grow your family!
