Helping tell the story of 14 years of marriage and almost 30 years of love is incredibly fulfilling. So the session with these two at Henry Hagg Lake was such a treat! One of my favorite things to shoot and share with you is a testimony of committed love, and I’m honored to share with you the beautiful story of Joshua and Rachael!!
He was folding up tables from a conference when he saw her, a seven-year-old little girl doing a cartwheel in a dress across the vacant stage. Slowly making his way over to her he spoke to her, “You’re almost eight,” he said, “almost a lady, and that’s not ladylike.” Looking into his deep brown eyes she thought, “If he thinks I’m a lady, I’d do anything.”
That was one of their first interactions together, and their two families remained close. Joshua always close by her side. Picking blackberries with her, overseeing the hula hoop contests (which Rachel is slightly embarrassed about now) and baptizing her dolls. He was a constant companion. But the sweet times together came to an end when her family moved to Alaska. Joshua, now twenty, helped move her family’s belongings out of the house.
For years they never saw each other except briefly at friends weddings. When she turned 20, Joshua called up her father, he expressed how he had been waiting for her to grow up, and now he finally felt like it was time and asked for his blessing to court his daughter.
Rachel was excited to say the least, she had always adored Joshua ever since she met him doing cartwheels on the stage so long ago. It didn’t take long for them to know that they were meant to be together for life. Dating for only 2 months, they became engaged and were shortly becoming Mr and Mrs.
In telling me her love story, Rachael said, “There are so many non-rosebud moments of life, so do it with someone who is already your friend.” Then glowing she added, “He really was created to be my husband.” They’ve known each other now for twenty-eight years.
And their story is currently made of up sevens. They met at seven and fourteen and married at 21 and 28. They’ve celebrated their 14 wedding anniversary, and also celebrated the arrival of their 7th baby at age 35 and 42.
Joshua and Rachael, being able to photograph your love and help bring your story to life is something I’ll always treasure. The way you still look at each other, building and encouraging each other up is something so rare in this world. Your love is not the feeling that washes away but has stood committed and true to each other through the good and bad seasons of life. Thank you for your witness that raw and honest love still exists and I hope that these pictures always remind you of your bond.
Now at Hagg Lake to soak up some last rays of sunlight!!
